fall restraint & fall arrest systems

A fall restraint system should be used in conjunction with a fixed length lanyard and prevents the operative from approaching a hazardous edge, whilst still allowing them to work within close proximity. For example, the system would be installed 2.5m from the edge of a roof and would be used with a 2m fixed length lanyard.

A fall arrest system would usually be installed further away from the roof edge but would be designed to allow access using an adjustable rope and grab unit. The operative would be responsible for restricting the length of the rope and grab from preventing a fall from occurring. This system would also require a rescue plan to be in place before any works can commence.

Yes, only trained and competent personnel should use the fall protection system. The should have the correct PPE and a risk assessment be provided prior to work starting.

Depending on the configuration of the system, Xcel Safety Group will always recommend that the end user purchases a PPE kit which usually comprises of:

- PPE kit bag

- 2 Point attachment harness with front and back "D" ring

- A fixed or adjustable lanyard to suit the configuration of the system

- A line traveller which can be used with the installed system

The system should be retested at least every 12 months if used work fall restraint, arrest or work positioning.
